Why Mother Light Was Published
After years of training and experiencing
meditative self-reflection, Mataji shared the story of her
experiences in a conversation with the former Archbishop
of Canterbury, the Right Reverend Lord Runcie, at a dinner
in honor of Princess Diana held at Lambeth Palace in
1993. Lord Runcie encouraged Mataji to publish her story and
agreed to write the book's foreword.
After reading the first draft of the
manuscript, Lord Runcie stated that he uses the book for his
morning meditation. In his foreword to the book, he writes,
"There is here a soul turned towards the light and so
there is depth in these sentences. [The author] ... has the
gift of contemplation."
The Books Message
The books format is a dialogue
between the "Spiritual Seeker" and the "Voice
of Truth Within." What the seeker in Mother Light
pursues is not primarily security or pleasure, but freedom
-- freedom from the mortal bonds of feeling anxious. Mother
Light helps one shake off this feeling of inadequacy or
limitedness by pointing out that one can be liberated from
the egos feelings of inadequacy through self-knowledge.
The book is an expression of the journey toward self-understanding
and offers the reader a meditative perspective on life. According
to the author, "This inward journey is initiated by meditative
practices that intensify as the practitioner becomes preoccupied
with the excitement of discovering the natural Light within."
Mother Light recognizes and guards the
freedom of intellect to take the plunge into the unknown,
and respects the faith and devotion that are necessary to
prepare one for the private and silent journey of self-discovery;
but nowhere is there a condemnation of this active world we
live in, nor is there an over emphasis on the other world.
